OLIGARCHY BREEDS POVERTY

THE PHILIPPINES is a rich country. However, its people are poor because its wealth is effectively controlled by only around 30 ruling and oligarchic families.

Of that number, 14 families have financial resources equivalent to 70 percent of the 2017 national budget amounting to P3.002 Trillion. These families have a total net worth of US42.75-B (P2.135 Trillion), according to Forbes magazine’s annual billionaires’ list.

These families, also known as oligarchs and political dynasties, have an almost absolute control of the fate and destiny of all the other 110 million Filipinos. They control vital industries, businesses and…

RECOVERY CENTER FOR SOLDIERS

EVEN before a soldier could get into actual battle, his rigid training is enough to bruise his body and spirit, a state that could only be soothed by a helping hand from the civilian populace they are trained to protect from terrorists and aggressors.

As such they need a modern, well-equipped first-aid center to diagnose, treat and relieve them of the ailments that come with being exposed to the severest natural risks in the battlefield and such a center must begin from their training camp to fortify their fighting spirit.

PRINCIPLED LEADERSHIP

SUPPORTIVE but never subservient.

This is how House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez wanted the people to remember the 17th Congress under his leadership.

In a TV interview on March 17, the House Speaker stressed his vision of a legislature that will be able to address the country’s problems and not a mere rubber stamp of the Executive Branch.

Strong-Arm Tactics

From the start, Alvarez’s leadership in the House had been rocked by allegations that his tenure would lead to a Congress losing its vital “check-and-balance” function.

With the creation of the “supermajority”, critics had feared that the Philippine legislature would…

CORRUPTION IN HOUSING

RESULT of a crooked government housing system.

This is how observers described the recent takeover by members of urban poor group Kadamay of government-funded housing projects in Bulacan.

The act was also a very loud testimony of how the prevailing corrupt system in the government housing program, has defeated the real purpose of why the National Housing Authority (NHA) was created.

6-M Housing Units Backlog

NHA was created by virtue of PD 757 on July 31, 1975 and was primarily mandated to providing decent and affordable housing to hundreds of thousands of marginalized and homeless Filipino families.…

CORRUPT TRANSPORT SYSTEM

WE HAVE a very corrupt transport agency and system.

Sen. Vicente Sotto III could not have described drivers roaming our streets better when he said that more than 50 percent of them are not only reckless but also stupid.

The reason? Those stupid drivers are products of a very corrupt and lax transport system which also explains why hundreds if not thousands of road deaths are happening every year in almost every area of the country.

Records obtained from Land Transportation Office indicate that there are currently at least 13 million licensed drivers in the country.

Sad…
