Inflation exceeds govt. targets in April

 While average inflation already exceeded the government’s target as of April 2018, the surge is seen as temporary and would normalize towards the end of the year, according to the National Economic and Development Authority.

 

The Philippines Statistics Authority reported that headline inflation accelerated to 4.5 percent in April 2018, higher than the 4.3 percent recorded in the preceding month and the 3.2 percent in April 2017.

Scientists cite weak local governance that led to deterioration of Boracay

In the recent science policy forum on environmental degradation of Boracay, scientists zeroed in on weak local governance and lack of enforcement of environmental conservation laws as the principal causes for its deterioration and eventual temporary closure.

 

Dr. Ma. Lourdes San Diego-Mcglone, of the UP Marine Science Institute, identified several environmental issues in Boracay Island, such as coastal erosion, improper coastal infrastructure development, high rate of population increase, water quality degradation, green tides, loss of coastal habitats and the local government’s insufficient knowledge on how to address the issues.

37.8% of 2018 budget is for social services, DBM tells IMF-WB

Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno addressed the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Group spring meeting in Washington D.C. last April and stressed that 37.8 percent of the national budget of the Duterte administration is for public services.

 

Joining him at the IMF-WBG meeting were were Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez, Minister Jose Victor Chan- Gonzaga, Finance Undersecretary Gil Beltran, National Economic and Development Authority Undersecretary Rolando Tungpalan, NEDA Undersecretary Adoracion Navarro, DOF Assistant Seretary Maria Edita Tan, DBM Assistant Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, and Climate Change Commission Commissioner Rachel Herrera.
