CORRUPT TRANSPORT SYSTEM

WE HAVE a very corrupt transport agency and system.

Sen. Vicente Sotto III could not have described drivers roaming our streets better when he said that more than 50 percent of them are not only reckless but also stupid.

The reason? Those stupid drivers are products of a very corrupt and lax transport system which also explains why hundreds if not thousands of road deaths are happening every year in almost every area of the country.

Records obtained from Land Transportation Office indicate that there are currently at least 13 million licensed drivers in the country.

ASEAN MEET FOCUSES ON SMEs

THE Philippines pushed for a better regulatory environment particularly for the small and medium enterprises in developing countries as it played host to the 3rd ASEAN-Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development meeting in Iloilo City recently.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said the activity had allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding of the regulatory challenges faced by SMEs in the various global value chain (GVC) stages.

It also served as the platform for coming up with ASEAN regional principles on business registration while enabling an environment of simplified rules and regulations on business registration and licensing, entry and exit,…

P7-B ROB?

Questionable P7-B Deal

Search for Tetangco’s replacement heats up

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will surely have a hard time finding a replacement for Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. who is due to step down come July 2.

With Tetangco’s retirement fast approaching, serious contenders have evolved: two BSP insiders, a private banker, a former Cabinet member who also served BSP’s policy-making body, the Monetary Board, and even a former economist-president.

Another possibility, not quite remote, is that Tetangco would be urged to stay for a third six-year term, though the BSP charter does not provide for it.

Four BSP…

IMF sees looming credit bubble burst

WHILE the country’s economy is not showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon, international economists however are seeing looming clouds in the horizon.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) team that just concluded its review of the Philippine economic policies warned against overheating of credit growth, due to an expected strong focus on infrastructure spending and property developments.

Led by Luis Breuer, the team held meetings with monetary and economic leaders of the country last Feb. 20-24 during which they noted the continued strong economic performance of the Philippines at 6.8 percent (from strong domestic demand that overcame the drag…
