Slow infra pace prompts WB to cut growth forecast for PHL

The “slower than expected” pace of infrastructure projects in the country this year prompted the World Bank to reduce anew its growth forecast at 6.6 percent.

The Washington-based multilateral lender said the delay in the anticipated push of government’s planned infrastructure program has contributed to the moderation of fixed capital formation growth, softening the growth prospects this year, said World Bank in its Asia Pacific Update of October 2017.

This is the third forecast made by WB for the country: the first was 6.9 percent, then scaled down to 6.8 percent and then now to 6.6 percent…

QUESTIONABLE PDOS DEAL

By the OpinYon Reportorial Team

DISGUSTED and betrayed.

This is how several non-government organizations (NGOs) advocating for the welfare and protection of Filipino migrant workers felt over plans by Overseas Workers Welfare Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac to hand-over the conduct of pre-departure orientation seminars (PDOS) for all departing OFWs exclusively to a favored group.

P160-B TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS

FIRST the good news: the government has allotted P160.8- B to address traffic woes in Metro Manila through a series of road-widening projects and construction of flyovers, underpasses and interchanges.

Now the bad news: since there will be a wave of construction works in different areas, traffic gridlocks are bound to get worse than it is today for the next three years.

The total tab: somewhere around P160.8 billion.

“We are on our way.  This year, we are spending P160.8 billion for traffic decongestion. It’s a big investment of the government for infrastructure projects,” DPWH Secretary Mark…

 ‘UBER DA BAKOD'

IT WAS a classic case of a solution turning into a hell of a problem itself.

To a certain extent, it can be likened to a cure that turned-out to be a poison that might kill the patient.

We refer here to ride- sharing services Uber and Grab which instead of reducing the number of vehicles plying Metro Manila’s already crowded streets resulting to daily heavy traffic jams, have now become one of the major contributors in this predicament.

Great Idea

That was in complete contrast to the original vision when the concept of transport network vehicle…

STOP HIGH HEELS IN WORKPLACES

By Ehlorra Mangahas

THE practice of forcing women employees especially those in the service industry to wear high heels must be stopped as it is unfair and clearly a form of sexism.

And it has long been the policy in the service industry such as malls, hotels, airlines – that female employees had to wear shoes with heels…
