Youth Councils’ Abolition Looms

FOR HOUSE Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, the Sangguniang Kabataan (Youth Council) and to a larger extent the village councils are unnecessary evils that must be exorcised from the country’s political set-up if we aspire to correct what he perceived as an impaired government system.

“Sa totoo lang hindi naman talaga nagta-trabaho ito e. Ang nagta-trabaho yung barangay captains. Alam mo sasabihin ko ito kahit maraming magalit sa akin na barangay kagawad. Kasi nga ayusin natin yung ating bansa. Kailangan nating baguhin” he said in an interview.

(The truth is they (the councils) are not working. It is the village chieftains who…

Koko in a bind

THE HEATED exchanges between President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Leila de Lima seemed to have taken its toll on the upper chamber and Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III appeared to have been caught in between the warring parties.

The Senate chief, who happens to be a party mate of the President and leader of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), remained non-committal on the calls of some of his colleagues – those sympathetic to Sen. De Lima to take a position on what they called as an unprecedented attack on a senator.

Lopez’s DENR appointment: ‘Elephant in the room?’

By Nitz Trinidad

The unexpected appointment of environmentalist and anti-mining advocate Regina “Gina” Lopez as environment and natural resources secretary is greeted with mixed reactions. While several sectors, mostly environmental activists, welcomed the designation earlier reserved by President-elect Rodrigo Duterto to the Left, a number of individuals and organizations, especially those with tie-up to the mining industry, expressed apprehensions.

In his earlier pronouncement, Duterte said he is pushing for responsible mining to help boost local exports as well as benefit the economy, and at the same time, vowing to launch a campaign against destructive mining. There would be a comprehensive…

De Lima’s dilemma

AS PER admission of Senator Leila de Lima in a press conference over the weekend, alleged plans to besmirch her name appeared to have taken off shortly after the May 9 elections where some unnamed individuals supposedly tried to gain access to certain convicts, in hope of identifying her as their supposed “coddlers”, having purportedly contributed to her campaign kitty.

But what Sen. De Lima did not see coming, obviously, was the extent of the damage that her tormentors wanted inflicted on her, in an apparent attempt to discredit her before the public and probably forced her to resign from…

Grace to break LP’s heart …and ranks?

A SPLIT is inevitable not only in the ruling Liberal Party (LP) but even in the current administration’s coalition with other political parties the moment Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II is pitted against Sen. Grace Poe in the 2016 presidential race.

A number of LP members have already voiced out the possibility of some of them veering away from Roxas’ candidacy, given his poor showing in the pre-election surveys, and opting to be aligned with the candidate that has better chances of winning.

But the same can also be said in the case of…
