Can AI predict when you will die?

NO ONE really knows the exact time and date of your death, so goes the old cliché. Still, that has not stopped medical experts and dreamers on working on devices that can actually predict the exact time of a patient’s death.

While the odds of that happening can be a long way off, there’s a chance now that artificial intelligence (AI) can help people determine if they are going to die within five years.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia recently revealed an AI technology which can help patients and doctors determine when they’re likely to die.

The…

Beware of Nuno Sa Punso

“Tabi-tabi po!”

If you ever happen to be in the rural areas of the Philippines, you’d probably hear this expression a lot, especially from older people, when passing simple, innocuous objects such as termite nests and even when sweeping the backyard.

And the reason for it is to simply avoid drawing the ire of the mythical so-called “nuno sa punso” (literally old man in an anthill).

According to Filipino folklore, the “nuno sa punso” refers to spirits of old persons who live under the ground. The “nuno” (Tagalog term for old man) is oft-described to be an old man…

Puzzling explosions detected in distant galaxy

ASTRONOMERS at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are stumped by what appears to be a peculiar burst of “bright X-rays” in a distant area of the universe.

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory detected the outburst, called CDF-S XT1, in a region known as the Chandra Deep Field South in October 2014.

Images from the telescope showed that the flash of X-rays became 1,000 times brighter over a few hours before fading dramatically in about a day, according to a statement from the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

"Ever since discovering this source, we've been struggling to understand its…

Vikings May Have Cremated and Buried Their Houses

FOR many of us, a house is just a place of abode. Other people treat their homes as a lasting legacy to be passed to future generations.

To the ancient Vikings of Scandinavia, however, their houses are more than simply places to live in – they believe that their houses have souls and should be treated with the same reverence as humans.

Or so it appears from an article recently published in the European Journal of Archaeology which postulated that the ancient Vikings apparently conducted “house cremations,” possibly in the belief that the practice would liberate the essence of…

‘Apocalyptic’ global warming could happen again

RESEARCHERS studying the largest-ever mass extinction in Earth’s history claim to have found evidence that it was caused by runaway global warming – and that the “apocalyptic” events of 250 million years ago could happen again.

About 90 per cent of all the living things on the planet were wiped out in the Permian mass extinction – described in a 2005 book called When Life Nearly Died – for reasons that have been long debated by scientists.

Competing theories have been put forward, including meteor strikes, huge volcanic eruptions and climate change.

Now a team of researchers from Canada, Italy,…
