‘Good Samaritans’ urged to make street kids safe this Christmas

SOCIAL Welfare Secretary Judy M. Taguiwalo has a reminder for the public especially the ‘Good Samaritans’ this coming Christmas season:  discourage street kids from begging by refraining from alms-giving.

“Let us make this Christmas season a safe season for street kids and discourage them from continuing mendicancy where they can seriously injure themselves by jumping from one public utility vehicle to another or by tapping the windows of privately-owned vehicles,” Taguiwalo said.

Doc meted 7 years over unremitted SSS contributions

A DERMATOLOGY clinic owner was convicted by the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City for failure to remit nearly P2 million in Social Security System (SSS) monthly contributions of his employees in direct violation of Republic Act 8282 or otherwise known as Social Security Act of 1997.

SSS Assistant Vice President for Operations Legal Department Renato Jacinto S. Cuisia said that Dr. Joel C. Mendez, owner of the Weigh Less Center located at Farmer's Plaza in Cubao, was sentenced to a jail term ranging from six years and one day to seven years as maximum.

DBM awaits for agencies’ budget plans for 2017

THE Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has instructed all departments, bureaus, offices, agencies and operating units (OUs) of the national government, to start submitting their annual budget execution plans for the 2017. 

Commissions and offices under the Constitutional Fiscal Autonomy Group (CFAG), State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and other recipients of budgetary support such as government-owned or controlled corporations (GOCCs) and local government units (LGUs) are also included in the Circular Letter No. 2016-9 dated October 27, 2016.

Grace wants to protect all media sources

THE Senate committee on public information and mass media chaired by Sen. Grace Poe has approved in principle legislative measures seeking to amend Republic Act No 53, as amended—also called the Shield or Sotto Law that protects print journalists from revealing their sources—to include broadcast and online media practitioners.

The measures—Senate Bill Nos. 6 and 486 filed separately by Senators Vicente Sotto III and Antonio Trillanes IV—breezed through a public hearing presided over by Poe, as she assured a committee report and the consolidated bill will be presented to the floor in two weeks.

CHED’s diploma-less education proposal sparks debates

DEBATES on whether to secure college diploma or obtain vocational certificates from technical schools like TESDA among tertiary students have sparked following the recent pronouncements of the Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Patricia Licuanan.

In her recent speech, Licuanan floated the idea of changing the present mindset of people wanting the college diploma when “maybe it is better for them to go to TESDA to take vocational courses”.
