MRT-3 “resurrects” 15 train coaches

No, it’s not an April Fools’ joke: the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) has now 15 train sets up and running after extensive maintenance work during Holy Week.

The announcement that the MRT-3 has increased the number of train sets came just in time for the expected upsurge of commuters in Metro Manila after the Lenten season.

Shorter lines

This means that commuters can expect shorter queues and less time wasted on waiting for trains, DOTr undersecretary for rails Timothy John Batan said.

“This will partially address the problem of long queues, but there will still be some lines,” he noted.

Batan also noted that passengers can now expect waiting times of about six minutes, compared to ten minutes when the number of running train sets was down to six two months ago.

The increase in the number of train sets also meant less demand for point-to-point buses fielded by the DOTr to augment MRT-3 operations during peak hours.

Extensive maintenance work

The increase in the number of MRT-3 train sets came about as a result of a five-day extensive maintenance procedures conducted during the Holy Week break.

According to MRT-3 spokesperson Aly Narvaez, the maintenance procedures have restored at least 45 train cars.

The 15 trains with three cars each can serve around 405,000 passengers a day.

The DOTr hopes to increase the number of running train sets to 20 during peak hours with the new maintenance service provider now working on the system.
