Villegas debunks ‘fake news’ on terrorist leaders’ death

CATHOLIC Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President and Lingayen Archbishop Socrates Villegas has condemned those behind fake news attributing to their group a statement stating among others that they were blaming the military for the killings of terrorist leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute.

Describing those behind the proliferation of fake news as ‘group of liars’, Villegas clarified that contrary to the post, the CBCP instead praised the military for their gallantry.

“On the contrary we laud the gallantry of our soldiers and their heroic efforts to free Marawi. We will gladly join the government in rebuilding the city in the measure we are able. We pray for all the dead, and for lasting peace in Mindanao,” he said in a statement.

The fake news with the headline “CBCP condemns the ‘brutal killing’ of Omar Maute and Isnilon Hapilon” was posted to www.okd2.com went viral, after it shared by FB group “Rodrigo Duterte Supporters”.

In the post, Villegas was quoted as saying that the gory photos of the two terrorists should not have been shown in public.

The bishop again cautioned the public against fake news sites and other platforms that peddle lies intended to confuse and cause harm, rather than inform the public. (Mico Agustin) #
