Govt eyes removing VAT exemption for elderly

THIS is one government move that would surely earn the ire of the public especially those in the twilight of their lives.

As part of the Department of Finance’s plan to rationalize tax system in the country, the value added tax exemption currently being enjoyed by senior citizens will be removed to cover for revenue losses from corporate and income taxes.

The rabbit in the hat will cost people thousands of pesos.

The rabbit is smart meters, Meralco, the magician, is taking from the hat to tell over 3.3 million power consumers in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, it will install soon.

The smart meter will cost US$100.00 or P4,750.00 each and will be installed in over 3.3 million consumers’ homes, half of Meralco’s franchise area. This will earn Meralco a total of P15.6-Billion.
