Newsbriefs: ‘Entrep’ revolution urged

TRADE Secretary Ramon Lopez has challenged some of the country’s top franchisers to continue the entrepreneurial revolution in the Philippines during the opening of the 15th Business and Franchise Expo at the World Trade Center recently.

To sustain entrepreneurial revolution, Lopez asked the Association of the Filipino Franchisers, Inc. (AFFI) to inject continuous innovation to develop new franchise models that further empower micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), adding that showing concern for small industry players is the real measure of success.

“An entrepreneurial nation is what will give us a good chance towards economic prosperity,” said Sec.…

US$9-B loan sparks call for audit of public debts

ADVOCACY group Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC) is pressing for an audit of all public debts in the wake of the $9-billion worth of new loans obtained by President Rodrigo Duterte in his recent visit to China.

FDC Secretary-General Sammy Gamboa urged the Duterte administration to conduct a comprehensive audit of all public debts along with the government’s fiscal policies, which the group called “long overdue.”

“A debt audit is the public’s assurance of the prudent and proper use of loans and that there is a policy environment that guarantees this,” Gamboa said.

FDC also warned of the…

Alert Recto catches budget ‘magician’

PLAYING to the hilt the role of an alert participant in a magic show called tax reform package, Senate Minority Leader Ralph Recto has apparently caught red-handed a finance department executive trying to use a “sleight of hand” in the government’s proposed measure.

What caught the attention of Recto was when Finance Undersecretary Karl Kendrick T. Chua told the Senate committee on ways and means that the government would return P180 billion to the people by lowering income taxes “.

Chua however said the lost revenues must be offset by broadening the VAT (value-added-tax) base” by raising taxes on other…

Bello says pay hike, job security are govt top concerns

LABOR and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III has said increasing workers’ pay, job security and boosting employment generation are among the Duterte administration’s top priority concerns.

“We are working towards adjusting salaries. Although this has to go through a long process since we have to consult all the stakeholders,” Bello said.

He made the assurance after survey results showed that nearly half of Filipinos consider improving the pay of workers as the top national issue that the Duterte administration should immediately address.

The latest Pulse Asia survey showed that 46 percent of Filipinos said that the new administration should focus…

Contrasting problems of OPEC, Singapore, China, and Japan

OIL is breaking past $50 per barrel.  This is a good sign but OPEC isn’t exactly the definition of cooperation.

We have religions in that group that have tried exterminating each other for centuries.

The possibility of them curbing their production as a single unit would be remarkable to say the least.

It comes down to needing cash today rather than the extension of cash flow for the future.  The Latin America countries that enjoyed $100 per barrel oil were short sighted and now trip over themselves in inefficient operational costs and social over spending.

The…
