Nobody Loves An Egocentric Know-It-All

We should use our opinions to start discussions, not to end them.” –Madeleine Albright

Friends, associates and I attend group discussions, networking events and breakfast meetings to build relationships and (hopefully) generate business. It’s not a good idea to go to these affairs if you have a closed mind or an attitude problem. Shouting at the top of your voice and arguing with attendees who don’t agree with you will not gain you any respect, friends or business.

Let me tell you about one participant who sticks out like a sore thumb in these gatherings. Although he has been present in many business events for the past three years, Ernie is an ‘epic fail’. Why? Because he is such an obnoxious know-it-all who bashes successful people in the industry which he desperately wants to penetrate. Like a broken record, he consistently talks big about his ‘bright ideas’. However, he is a NATO man: No Action Talk Only.

Nobody likes him because of the negative vibes he brings into a room. If he had the good sense to listen and learn from various opinions during discussions, he would be in a far better place than where he has been for the past five years: jobless and friendless.

If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting. Is it surprising that Ernie is not getting anywhere close to making his dreams come true?

Allow me to share some tried and tested steps for successful participation in group discussions.

1. Stop being a boastful show-off talking about your favorite topic: yourself.

2. Show interest in what other people are saying.

3. Listen with the intent to bond – not to argue.

4. Ask relevant questions that can lead to possible collaboration and opportunities.

5. Build bridges of communication instead of offensive walls.

You never know where the road may lead you. Instead of bragging, LISTEN, LEARN and CONNECT. Hay Naku!
