OpinYon Back-Page Stories: Surge in drug surrenders turns to rehabilitation nightmare

By Rose de la Cruz

THE surge in the number of drug users and sellers surrendering to police and local governments has posed a serious challenge to local governments’ rehabilitation centers.

Already, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista reported that the QC Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center or Tahanan in Barangay Payatas is at full capacity of 150 persons with another 36 on the waitlist.

The Dangerous Drugs Board views the situation as a “happy problem” as its facilities are still coping. But this could become worrisome if financial and other facilities would not be forthcoming and the numbers of voluntary…

OpinYon Back-Page Stories: Lopez DENR Stint Could Spur Renewable Energy Use

By Bobby Ricohermoso

SEVERAL energy sector analysts are confident that the appointment of Sec. Gina Lopez at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) could pave the way for further utilization of renewable energy in the country and in the process help in the country’s economic growth and preservation of the environment.

The view is contrary to the apprehension of some groups particularly the consumer watchdog Citizen Watch that Lopez could pose a threat to the country’s continued economic expansion, especially in Mindanao which reels from shortage of power supply.

GROWTH AGENDA

Journey to Samal's Vanishing Island

Island French Resort - Bamboo & Bougainvillea Archway

by Samuela Belibet, OpinYon Mindanao

One of the things I love about going to Samal is the quick and easy access to the island. Weekends are particularly a joy to travel there. Turnover of ferries is fast so commuters don't have to wait long from boarding. We were immediately greeted by tricycle and habal-habal drivers, as well as peddlersof trinkets and food items.

Tasting ALocal Delicacy

I bought…

OpinYon Back-Page Stories: Bautista's Dilemma

COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Bautista has been getting more than his share of bad luck in the past few days.

His fellow officials especially the six commissioners have described his leadership as a total failure.

In a strongly-worded memorandum dated June 3 that was leaked to the media, the commissioners enumerated serious concerns about Bautista’s leadership.

They cited several issues such as delayed honoraria for election workers, inaction on several incidents such…

OpinYon Back-Page Stories: Build and Burn
The Duterte cabinet: Conflicting interests at work?

One side is building the house. The other side is burning it down. This happens when the left mixes with the right under one roof.

The house is the government of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, where the communists and the capitalists are each given a room.

On one side is his economic team, led by incoming Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, who’s totally committed to recoup the Philippines’ former reputation as an ideal haven for industry – especially foreign investment.

On the other side are the Leftists in his government – led by incoming Labor…
