Nene says PH not Canada’s dumpsite

FORMER Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, Jr. has maintained that our country is not a dumpsite for other nations’ garbage and that local government units (LGUs) are right in exercising their powers to prevent such wrongful act.

Pimentel who is the principal author of RA 7160 otherwise known as Local Government Code of 1991 pointed out that “the Philippines is not a garbage dump of Canada or any country for that matter,”.

In a text message sent to the EcoWaste Coalition he added that the Tarlac provincial government is right and should be commended for asserting their constituents’ right to…

Legarda Lauds Obama Climate Change Plan

SENATOR Loren Legarda has described as an important step towards the right direction the decision of US President Barack Obama to significantly reduce emissions from his country’s power plants as part of his commitment to fight climate change.

She was reacting to an earlier instruction of Obama asking US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) to reduce their overall carbon emissions by 32% by the year 2030, as compared to 2005 levels.

Legarda, UN Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia-Pacific, said that she hopes more nations, including the Philippines, will express their commitment to mitigate…

LGUs Urged To Guard vs Foreign Waste Disposal

ENVIRONMENTAL watchdog EcoWaste Coalition has called on local authorities to be on the alert as customs authorities scamper for alternative disposal options for the controversial Canadian garbage shipments following strong rejection by the government of Tarlac last month.

“To prevent such eventuality, we call upon concerned local government units (LGUs) to pass preemptive measures that will prohibit the disposal of garbage from Canada or any other countries in facilities under their jurisdiction,” said Aileen Lucero, coordinator of the group.

“Ordinances or resolutions by concerned provincial, city and municipal councils would frustrate any move by the Bureau of Customs to dispose…

World on threshold of climate safety limit

THE world is now halfway towards the internationally-agreed safety limit of a maximum 2°C rise in global average temperatures, according to researchers.

That limit seeks to prevent the global warming caused by the burning of fossil fuels exceeding 2°C above the pre-industrial global temperature.

The UN’s Paris climate summit later this year aims to ensure that it is not breached.

It appears that the human race has taken roughly just 250 years to stoke global warming by 1°C. On present trends, we look likely to add the next 1°C far more quickly – across much of the world, many…

Legarda : Climate Change Threat to Nat’l Security

SENATOR Loren Legarda has renewed her call for the government to understand the effects of climate change in all aspects of society, including national security.

Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change, made the statement following a report from the United States Department of Defense that regarded climate change as a security risk for the US.

“The US military has already seen the link between climate change and national security and they are starting to integrate possible impact of global warming into their planning" she pointed out.

"Our own defense force should also know the…
