Is Rizal Still Relevant to Our Time?

Rizal’s basic beliefs on various issues of his time are contained in “The Man and the Hero” by Ronnie Espergal Pasigui and are hereby adapted because of their striking relevance to the current situation of the Filipino nation.

1. Rizal defines political culture as a set of ideas, values and attitudes about government and the political process held by a community or nation. In general political culture combines deeply-shared beliefs and values and the result is a flourishing nationalism. One of the key elements of political culture is the justification and operation of a country’s government.

Osmena: Roxas Needs “Effective Messaging”

How do you solve a problem like Mar Roxas?

For Sen. Sergio Osmena III, the key is in effective “messaging” and it’s not the “Daang Matuwid” [straight path] popularized by President Benigno Aquino.

“It’s an overused phrase. Sanay na yung mga tao, jaded na. There are some pluses and minuses. He should come up with something new. Senators on ‘election mode,’ missing sessions

The 2016 elections is still eight months away, but some Senators, either seeking re-election or higher posts, are all on “election mode,” thus palpably absenting themselves from plenary sessions.

Even Senate President Franklin Drilon himself is convinced that neophyte Sen. Grace Poe, who has yet to formally declare her intention to run next year, is already gearing herself for the presidency.

“In my view, Sen. Grace Poe is already a candidate for president. The writings are on the wall. She will run,” he said.

“She has been going around, making speeches to various schools and organizations. Hindi naman gagawin iyan…

A leap of faith? Or flight of fancy?

Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero, in trying to win in the forthcoming national elections, may be out to prove something that never in the country’s history has been achieved so far – that of becoming the next president and vice president as independent candidates.
But with the looming support coming from the ranks of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), the second biggest political party, the idea of them running as “independents” will eventually be diluted.
The reality of the situation calls for an established machinery to launch a nationwide campaign, which will be difficult to do especially for…

Trillanes pays consultants generously P16M/mo

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV found himself in the middle of a controversy, when reports came out that he allocates P1.63 million a month for the salaries of 63 consultants, including his brother.

His office reportedly spent P18 million in consultancy fees last year, the highest compared with his peers.

The issue came out as early as May, when the Commission on Audit (CoA) sought an explanation from the Senate on its continuously increasing expenses for consultancy services, with a single consultant receiving as high as P94,000 a month.

While initially it was not identified, the resurfacing of this issue…
