DIGONG’S ‘RAPE JOKE’ DRAWS FLAK FROM ‘PINAYS,’ DIPLOMATS

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s true character unravels as election day draws near.

Just last week, the “tough-talking” presidential candidate drew the ire of outraged citizens, particularly Filipino women, and foreign dignitaries after making a “rape joke” about an Australian missionary who was among the hostages and later killed by inmates in Davao City back in 1989.

Even those used to the Mayor’s offensive language — such as last year when he cursed Pope Francis, after which he formally apologized to the Vatican — are now freshly shocked at his recent infamous words, “…dapat mayor ang mauna.” It meant that…

THE DOER, THE WINNER!

Liberal Party presidential bet Mar Roxas is confident that he will “gain the upper hand” in the presidential polls on May 9.

Before hundreds of Liberal Party leaders and die-hard “RoRo” (Roxas/Robredo) supporters, at Club Filipino, on April 14, he expressed his confidence that would emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

Of course, bashers have pooh-poohed Roxas’ assertions that he will win the 2016 elections.

How, they have wondered, could someone lagging behind in presidential surveys and the butt of all kinds of jokes and criticism be so confident of a win?

The answer is simple. Among presidentiables, Roxas alone…

NOT A “PRO-POOR” BET

Clearly, Vice-President Jejomar Binay is not the “pro-poor” and the “pang-masa” candidate he has always marketed himself to the voters.

If he really is running to help uplift Filipino people, as he always claims in his political sorties, he should never have opposed the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), the landmark social-welfare program of the Aquino administration.

Formerly lambasted by Binay as a virtual “bribe” offered by the administration to gain leverage in the 2016 elections, the 4Ps now earns the full support of the UNA presidential candidate, who has promised to add more teeth to the program – quite…

SURVEYS SHOULD BE FOR ANALYSIS, NOT FOR MIND-CONDITIONING

As one of OpinYon’s regular columnists have put it succinctly on this week’s issue, mudslinging and black propaganda are again making its mark in the Philippine political scene in the upcoming May elections.

One apparent unfortunate victim of such “dirty tactics” is LP presidential bet Mar Roxas. For months on end, surveys from the Philippines’ top “poll centers” like Pulse Asia have put him either in third or fourth place, over “more popular” rivals such as Senator Grace Poe and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

But is there any reason to believe in the surveys?

The fact that political surveys…

TRAFFIC KILLS

TRANSPORTATION Secretary Jun Abaya was quoted as saying recently that monstrous traffic jams could be affecting thousands of people daily, but at least it’s “not fatal” (hindi nakamamatay).

How insensitive can Abaya be?

As expected, Abaya’s off the cuff remarks immediately earned for him a deluge of criticisms from the public, forcing him to eventually backtrack and apologize.

Just for the information of Abaya and his fellow insensitive officials in the government, traffic kills both literally and figuratively.

Dr. Leo Olarte, chairman of the Coalition of Clean Air Advocates of the Philippines (CCAAP), said that being caught in the middle…
