CLOSING-OUT SALE

SOME quarters have likened the way outgoing Aquino administration is disposing-off government assets to a department store that is about to close shop.

Just recently, the interagency Privatization Council has approved the sale of state assets worth P83.1 million.

The decision came barely few days after the council approved the sale amounting to P33.2 million of 5,161-square meter BBC-Legazpi City property, previously owned by former Ambassador Roberto S. Benedicto.

Likewise, the council also gave the green light to sell the 1,146-square meter Wigwam Compound located in Baguio City for P20.7 million formerly owned by trader Jose Campos.…

THE REAL LOSERS
Editorial Cartoon by Romy Castro

LATEST reports in the business front indicated that Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and Globe Telecoms have just joined hands in buying out the telecommunications assets of conglomerate San Miguel Corporation (SMC).

The deal is expected to further strengthen the two firms’ stranglehold of the local telecommunications industry amid demands for them to lower their rates and improve their services through faster connections.

LAUDABLE MOVE

FOR QUITE some time now, the outgoing Aquino administration has been at the receiving end of severe and cruel criticisms for being inefficient, corrupt, slowpoke, insensitive and the likes.

While President Aquino and his officials are trying very hard to put up a brave face by trumpeting their alleged economic ‘gains’, there is no denying the fact the people who voted for him six years ago terribly disappointed.

In fact, the failures of the administration in almost every aspect of governance were so glaring that opposition leader Sen. Juan Ponce-Enrile was prompted to declare that the government took a vacation…

That Roxas opted to campaign based on the platform of continuity instead of change and reforms had sealed his fate even before the first vote was cast last May 9.

But more than the defeat suffered by Roxas, Aquino’s own legacy is now in doubt as the political exercise was also seen as a referendum on his leadership.

The fact that Roxas lost…

DUTERTE SHOULD COME CLEAN

SENATOR ANTONIO Trilanes IV first caught the country’s imagination when he led a group of fellow young soldiers and staged the so-called Oakwood Mutiny on July 27, 2003, to dramatize what they described as rampant graft and corruption in the government of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Then while in prison, he surprised everyone when he ran for senator and won during the 2007 elections.

As a sitting senator, Trillanes again made the headlines in 2012 when he was exposed as President Aquino’s backchannel negotiator in the country’s continuing territorial row with China over the South China Sea.

During his alleged…
