RETHINKING RICE POLICY

IT SEEMS like the government’s dream of attaining rice self–sufficiency will remain just like that - a dream.

This after the National Food Authority (NFA) recently reported that the country would still fall short of the required buffer stock even with the planned importation of 250,000 metric tons of rice.

The law mandates that NFA must ensure a stock for 15 days for the whole year and 30 days for the lean months. NFA’s current inventory of the main staple is only good for six days.

Studies indicated that about 32,000 metric tons of rice are consumed daily which means…

TOURISM AND TERRORISM

Tourism Assistant Secretary Ricky Alegre

THE words terrorism and tourism may sound like a perfect rhyme, but they bring about contrasting meanings and effects especially in the case of our country’s travel competitiveness ranking.

This after the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2017 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index reported that terrorism has been pulling down the country’s travel and tourism sector causing it to slide five places to 79th spot out of 136 countries.

Also, the country got a very low overall score of 3.6 and of the 14 pillars considered, it was on safety and security that the Philippines…

ALARMING TREND

DURING the 2016 presidential campaign, then presidential candidate former Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte vowed that if elected, he would do everything within his power to minimize if not totally stop the deployment overseas of our homegrown workforce.

As a city mayor, he was cognizant of the hardships the migrant workers have to endure just to earn a living and provide for the needs of their families.

That is aside from the social costs as well as the deterioration of traditional and core family values and relationships in exchange for financial freedom.

More than a year after Duterte assumed his…

TRUE GENIUS

FULLY appreciative of his contributions and what he had done to the financial sector and to the country’s economy as a whole, the highly respected The Asian Banker has recently handed outgoing BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. a lifetime leadership achievement award.

In bestowing the award, The Asian Banker chair Emmanuel Daniel lauded Tetangco for playing the central role in helping the Philippines transform from a speculative to an investment-grade economy.

“[Tetangco] made a huge difference… lifting his country to becoming investment grade and stepping high and tall in the league of nations,” Daniel said  while also describing him…

UNFAIR DEAL

THERE’S a saying that haste makes waste.

But in the case of PLDT and Globe, the country’s two biggest telecommunications companies, it appears that they see it the other way around.

For them, haste makes fast bucks. This after the duopoly reportedly closed in record time a multibillion peso deal involving the P70-B telco assets of erstwhile competitor San Miguel Corporation (SMC).

The deal was sealed despite pending cases in court brought about by Philippine Competition Commission (PCC), the government’s antitrust watchdog.

It was gathered that the telcos paid SMC about P13 billion last Tuesday, the last tranche…
