ALARMING TREND

DURING the 2016 presidential campaign, then presidential candidate former Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte vowed that if elected, he would do everything within his power to minimize if not totally stop the deployment overseas of our homegrown workforce.

As a city mayor, he was cognizant of the hardships the migrant workers have to endure just to earn a living and provide for the needs of their families.

That is aside from the social costs as well as the deterioration of traditional and core family values and relationships in exchange for financial freedom.

More than a year after Duterte assumed his…

UNFAIR DEAL

THERE’S a saying that haste makes waste.

But in the case of PLDT and Globe, the country’s two biggest telecommunications companies, it appears that they see it the other way around.

For them, haste makes fast bucks. This after the duopoly reportedly closed in record time a multibillion peso deal involving the P70-B telco assets of erstwhile competitor San Miguel Corporation (SMC).

The deal was sealed despite pending cases in court brought about by Philippine Competition Commission (PCC), the government’s antitrust watchdog.

It was gathered that the telcos paid SMC about P13 billion last Tuesday, the last tranche…

TIMELY ASSISTANCE

THE Japanese government’s decision to draw up an action plan for the country’s power sector to help solve perennial problems such as limited sources and supply as well as exorbitant rates could not have come at a more appropriate time.

For several years now, the Philippines has been consistently posting economic gains but the prohibitive costs of electricity are preventing the country from making significant economic strides.

As we all know, high power rates, subpar infrastructures, bureaucratic red tape, lawlessness and corruption are among the reasons that are keeping manufacturers and businessmen from bringing in their investments in the…

DIGONG’S SINCERITY AND DEDICATION

DESPITE incessant attacks against his person especially his human rights records relative to his campaign against illegal drugs, President Rody ‘Digong’ Duterte continues to enjoy trust and confidence from among influential local and international business groups, economic managers and credit rating agencies.

It appears that these groups especially the credit rating agencies are impressed with his leadership no matter how uncanny it may seem and that he is able to deliver the economic programs that his administration has lined-up for the country.

The Duterte administration’s Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022, which serves as its socioeconomic blueprint, targets 7 to 8 percent…

SECURING OUR OFWs’ FUTURE

IT’S GOOD that the Social Security System (SSS) is pushing for the mandatory coverage of overseas Filipino workers as part of the proposed reforms and amendments in its charter now pending before Congress.

The move is seen to help achieve its goal of expanding membership and at the same time ensure that our OFWs would have something to look up to once they decide to stop working overseas and stay in the country for good.

According to the latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), there are 2.4 million OFWs as of 2016.

However, of this number,…
