‘Eddie Garcia’ bill for the protection of actors

By Rose de la Cruz

The death of legendary actor/director Eddie Garcia from an accident during a shooting exposed the occupational risks that showbusiness people constantly face, hence the need to pass a law to ensure their safety always.

The “Eddie Garcia” law was filed by the late actor/director’s stepson, Rep. Mikee Romero, 1-PACMAN partylist as he appealed to his fellow legislators to support him in his quest to create a law to put a bigger meaning to Tito Eddie Garcia's death," Romero said in a Facebook post.

"I expect more than 100 of my fellow legislators to co-sign the bill with me. And likewise expect the Senate through Senate President Tito Sotto to file the counterpart bill in the Senate," Romero said.

Romero said his "Eddie Garcia Law" will be his first bill when the 18th Congress opens on July 22.

"The ‘Eddie Garcia Bill’ will be a means to safeguard the welfare and well-being of all actors working in the television and/or in the movie industry," the congressman said.

This bill's salient points are as follows:

1.       Mandatory actors and production insurance coverage.

2.       Specific work hours for (between 8 to 12 hours only) a) below 18 years old; b) 18-59 years old and c) 60 and above (senior citizens).

3.       Medical and safety procedures on production set and within its area of responsibility

4.       Mandatory installation of safety officers within its area of responsibility

5.       Emergency operational standards and procedures

6.       Penalties and liabilities for violations

Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy, Bagong Henerasyon partylist and chair of the Committee on Women and Gender Equality, expressed her party’s deepest condolences to the family, friends, co-workers, and fans of Eddie Garcia, including our Coalition President, Rep. Michael Odylon “Mikee” L. Romero.

We mourn but we also honor and celebrate Eddie Garcia and his life well lived.

As a group, the Party-list Coalition will nominate Eddie Garcia for the posthumous conferment of the National Artist award. The man and his legacy stand for what is beautiful and true about Philippine Art, specifically in Film and Television.
