Teacher-Filmmaker bestowed QC Dragon Star Award

Are teaching and filmmaking complementary with each other? Both are in pursuit of education.

That’s why public school teacher and filmmaker Jek Jumawan has made a considerable reconciliation between the two fields of endeavor—and charmingly so.

A mentor at the Lagro High School in Fairview, Quezon City, Jumawan teaches Filipino subjects and organizing regular filmmaking workshops to his students, among them, Teatro Oktubre Nueve and Sining Bahandi Youth Filmmakers. “It’s a mission and a vision,” said Jumawan whose first film, “Hulagway” won Audience Choice Award at the 2010 Pandayang Lino Brocka Independent and New Media Festival.

His advocacy in proliferating the film knowledge as a backgrounder in the development of character and values among high school students makes him an outstanding contributor to the refinement of the moral fiber of the youth. It also makes him a role model among his colleagues.

The Quezon City government bestowed Jumawan the 2019 Dragon Star Award Hometown Heroes of Quezon City.

Given last April 8 at the Quezon City Sports Club, Jumawan said he was proud and excited to accept a once-in-a-lifetime recognition to his aspirations. “Salamat po sa konsiderasyon sa akin. Makakaasang patuloy akong magiging tulay sa pagpapayabong sa talento ng mga kabataang Pilipino (Thanks for considering me. Rest assured that I will continue to advance and enhance the talents of the Filipino youth),” said Jek, Geraldo B. Jumawan in real life.

“As a believer, I quote Arthur Ashe when he said that true heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”

“Ang pagbibigay ng oras at panahon para magsilbi sa mga kabataan ay walang katapusan. Hangga't ako ay may hininga, patuloy akong magiging tulay sa pagpapayabong sa talento ng mga kabataang Pilipino (Giving time and effort to serve the youth is endless. As long as I live I will be a bride in the enhancement and advancement of the Filipino youth)," underscored Jumawan.

Jumawan will also receive on May 8 the 5th Gawad Geny Lopez, Jr. Bayaning Guro 2019 Award as one of the outstanding teachers. “Para po sa mga naniniwala sa aking kakayahan at sumuporta sa aking adbokasiyang makatulong sa talento ng mga kabataan ang aking karangalang matatanggap bilang Regional Winner! Salamat sa Panginoon (This award as a Regional Winner is for those who believe in my capacity as a supporter of the advocacy to help the talented youth. Thank God)!” he quipped.

Aside from being an auteur, Jumawan (“Nothing Beats Oldies,” “Pabunot,” “Sulyap,” “Pas-An” etc) is also an actor for other director like in “Excuse Me Po” for Cinema One Originals 2018 directed by Ronald Espinosa Batallones and “Tsub Tsa.”

For his direction, “Nothing…” won Honorable Mention Best in an Indie Film, Top Shorts Film Festival , USA in 2017 and Special Mention in for Indie Actor,  Five Continents International Film Festival, Venezuela in 2018; “Sulyap” won Best Actor Honorable Mention at the Oniros Film Awards in Aosta, Italy in 2018; “Pas-An” bagged the Honorable Mention for Best Supporting Actress for  Maricel Balderama in South Films and Arts Academy, Chile in 2018,  Best Inspirational short film and finalist for Best Actor for him at the Oniros Film Awards both in 2018; Platinum Award Best Actor, Directors Award, Indonesia in 2017; Finalist, Baclaran Film Fetival,  Pasay City; Finalist, Largabista Film Festival, Leyte and exhibition at the  Sinulog Film Festival, Cebu City all in 2017.

Jumawan was also a recipient of the Ambassador Award from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
