Pinay ex-broadcaster gets serendaded in Vegas by the Lettermen

By Boy Villasanta

“Yes, my dear friend, what a wonderful night,” exclaimed Faye Romero, a Filipina radio and television broadcaster in the Philippines when she was working as a marketer and announcer for Eagle Broadcasting Corporation.

Romero reacted to this writer’s social media post about her being serenaded by one of the members of the iconic singing group The Lettermen who performed at Southpoint Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas three nights ago.

“It was a night to remember with one of my favorite vocal trios, The Lettermen,” said Romero who worked as announcer at DZEC, owned by the Iglesia ni Cristo when she was still active with the station.

“Tony Butalla chose me from the audience while singing his favorite song ‘Maria’ from the Broadway musical and film ‘Westside Story’,” she informed.

Butalla is the eldest and most veteran member of the group as he was already there when the trio was formed. Eventually, new members were taken in since its creation in the late fifties to the contemporary times because the members either resigned or took a vacation.

The current members, aside from Butalla, to complete the triumvirate are Donovan Tea and Bobby Poynton.

“Akala ko, sa plaka ko lang sila maririnig o mapapanood sa Youtube. Hindi ako makapaniwala na makakaharap ko sila especially siTony Butalla. Dati, sa radio program ko lang na ‘Sincerely Yours’ sa DZEC napapakinggan ang The Lettermen dahil lagi kong pinapatugtog ang plaka nila. Ngayon, kaharap ko na sila at kinakantahan pa ako (I thought I could only listen to them on vinyl record or watch them on Youtube. I couldn’t believe I would be face-to-face with them especially with Tony Butalla. Before, I could only play and hear them in my radio show in DZEC. Now, I am before them and they were singing to me),” smiled Faye who is planning to produce shows live or recorded for iconic singers, especially foreign acts.

“Until this very moment, I am proud I am a Filipina who was chosen by Tony Butalla among the many multiracial females,” Faye beamed.

The Lettermen is famous for the songs “The Way You Look Tonight,” “When I Fall in Love,” “Theme from A Summer Place,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “Volare,” “Somewhere My Love,” “I Have Dreamed,” “Traces/Memories Medley,” “Friendly Persuasion” among others.
