1st Filipina councilor in UK recalls her youth in Boyfriends

By Boy Villasanta

It was an emotional viewing and listening experience for Cynthia Alcantara- Barker, the first Filipina elected councilor in the United Kingdom, when she came face to face with the singing group Boyfriends during the singers’ concert in London.

“Aside from being nostalgic I was kind of teary-eyed because during the popularity of Boyfriends I was in high school,” said Barker, the only Filipino board council member of Elstree and Borehamwood boroughs in the UK.

“That’s why when they held a concert in the UK, I was emotional but at the same time, excited because they were before me singing the tunes of my youth,” chuckled Barker during our exclusive interview recently done in San Pablo City where she hails from.

During the casual but special interview, Barker was awarded one of the outstanding alumni of Laguna Colleges in San Pablo where she studied her high school.

“The Boyfriends band was the toast of the local music scene at the time. I remember their songs very much. They were youth oriented,” recalled Barker who welcomed and assisted the members of Boyfriends in their visit to the UK.

Some of the hit songs of Boyfriends were “Dahil Mahal Kita,” “Sumayaw, Sumunod,” “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal,” “Nais Kong Malaman Mo” etc.

The Boyfriends was one of the bands in the 1970s which popularized the era of the Manila Sound.

When they went to London, the Manila Sound of the past was revived which enlivened the Filipino crowd abroad.

Some of the members, past and present of Boyfriends are Gary Arriola, Artie Ilacad, Bob Guzman, Joey Abando and Lloyd Sale.

Barker is a popular political figure in the UK particularly in Elstree and Borehamwood where she does community work for her constituents.
