Shamaine leads poetry reading in feminist writer Marra PL Lanot’s book launch

By Boy Villasanta

Television and film actress Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino had the advantage of being advised on her performance last Monday night’s book launch of celebrated feminist writer Marra PL Lanot as she is very busy with her showbiz work.

“Noong isang taon pa ako sinabihan ni Marra to be one of the readers of one of her poems (Marra had already informed me about public reading of one of her poems as early as last year),” Shamaine said at the Lugawan Republic in Tomas Morato Avenue.

“I’ve been very busy with taping ‘Ang Probinsiyano’ that’s why I had to make way for this,” added the prizewinning actress.

“It’s good I didn’t have a schedule today so I could concentrate on this,” she quipped.

Centenera-Buencamino was very passionate and engrossed about her interpretation of Lanot’s piece on the poetess’ thoughts and emotions on the month of October, a cycle poem on the labyrinth of seasons and its effects on the human life.

She said she squeezed her poetry reading in between her shoots. She’s now with GMA Network doing a new TV drama to be shown anytime soon. She can, after all, do ABS-CBN and other video networks because she’s a freelance artist, she said.

Other poetry readers during the launch of Lanot’s “Cadena de Amor,” a collection of poems in English, Filipino and Spanish were Banaue Miclat-Janssen, Raquel Villavicencio, Loli Mara, among others, read pieces or excerpts with gusto from the book.

The book launch was also a venue for Karina David, an artist, the other half of the popular singing duo Inang Laya who popularized the emancipative feminist song “Babae” in the 70s and a former government official, to serenade the audience with her solo rendition of nationalist songs.

The book launch was a sort of gathering as well of social activists led by the author’s husband Jose F. Lacaba.

Other celebrities who joined the book event were progressive couple Satur Ocampo and Bobbie Malay; National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose; novelist and maverick scriptwriter Lualhati Bautista; erstwhile and active members of the prestigious and credible Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino Kryp Yuson and Nicanor G. Tiongson, respectively; sculptress Luch Dalena; husband and wife team of film artists Carlitos Siguion-Reyna and Bibeth Orteza; Movie and Television Review and Classification Board members Joey Romero, Atty. Gaby Concepcion, Manoly Espinosa and many more.
