Historian, TV host and university professor Xiao Chua commenced the program of the 32nd celebration of the historic EDSA People Power anniversary at the EDSA People Power Monument at the corner of EDSA and White Plains late Sunday afternoon.

Chua, a sought- after resource person on Philippine history, talked of the significance of the event for the Filipino people. “EDSA is very important in our national life. It is a reminder to all of us about the dark days of the dictatorship and to remind us not to let another dictator rule us,” said Xiao who has been very busy participating in many liberation movements in the country especially in the millennium.

Edru Abraham, a popular musician espousing the use of indigenous music and musical instruments and organizer of Kontra Gapi (Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino), a group of young academe-based male and female musicians from UP contributed to the nationalistic fervor of the occasion.

Lados, a singer from Mindanao performed a rap-type number depicting the real condition of the country.

Pop singer Leah Navarro also did a rap music she said she only rehearsed that day. It was a tribute to Senator Leila de Lima who is detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center for drug-related cases.

Now in their retirement period, the famous duo Inang Laya—composed of former government official Karina David and academician Becky Demetillo who did the hit song “Babae” during the Martial Law days—never got tired of sharing their feminist tunes and didn’t hesitate in performing for the EDSA crowd nostalgic of their music during the social movements against Marcos.

Senators Antonio Trillanes IV, Kris and Jackie Aquino’s cousin Bam Aquino and Sharon Cuneta’s hubby Francis Pangilinan were around to memorialize EDSA People Power in 1986.

The crowd was estimated to have been close to 7,000.
