NLEX goes to ASEAN

By Rose de la Cruz

Having renowned itself in Luzon, NLEX Corporation and Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. will be venturing into the Visayas and Mindanao and soon in the rest of the Association of Southeast Asian nations.

This was announced last November by Rodrigo E. Franco,, president/CEO since January 2016 of Metro Pacific Tollways Corp and president of Manila Tollways Corp, in a keynote speech of the 5th NLEXcellence awards held at the Sofitel.

Almost everyone now knows Brand NLEX, which is similar to “superior road infrastructure that is classified as first class,” that is unmatched Service Excellence and a communication and traffic management system keenly responsive to the modern day needs of motorists and travelers. “

NLEX visions, he said, is “Yesterday, Luzon .... Today, the Philippines ... Tomorrow, the rest of ASEAN – or Pan ASEAN.”

He said MPTC recently entered into a strategic partnership with a large infrastructure company with interests in toll roads, port operations, water, energy and telecommunications.

Through MPT Asia Corporation, we acquired about 6.6 billion shares of PT Nusantara of Jakarta, sending a powerful message that MPTC and NLEX Corporation are now making our excellent brand of service to the rest of the ASEAN region.

He said his company has explored the possibilities of building toll roads in Vietnam and more neighboring countries.

Back home, we at MPTC continue with our unwavering purpose to build and provide a widening road network across the entire nation. Through NLEX, SCTEX, CAVITEX AND CCLEX, MPTC continues to pave the pave the way for the riding public to have a better, safer, and faster means to move ever closer toward continuing progress.

“More than an infrastructure company, we are a firm committed to make progress possible for every transport partner, for the communities we serve, and for the country as a whole.
That’s the reason we don’t stop improving our technology. Recently, we have revolutionized our toll management system through the Digital Tollways Program – introducing various electronic modes of payment,” he stressed.

Our own Easytrip RFID has made toll transactions seamless. Then came the beep cards, as well as the MasterCard – whether debit, prepaid and credit cards. Well, we also have the signature Smart MasterCard, which is powered by PayMaya.

“We believe in continuous improvement of our processes and systems.  We keep innovating,” he said.

We have enjoyed the blessings of a seamless modern expressway in our midst. We are not selfish, so we are sharing such benefits to our ASEAN neighbors, he said.

At the end of the day, everyone remembers who started NLEX first, and where this modern roadway first saw the light of day. NLEX, in a manner of speaking is our gift to the rest of the ASEAN.

The new mantra nowadays is to make our organization easy-to-do- business with.

NLEXcellence is here to stay due to the thrill and excitement of winning – or being recognized for every innovation you introduce to improve our services – especially making our roads safe for everyone, said Grace Ayento.

We remain driven by these core beliefs: First, potential is nothing without the right foundations; second, the journey towards progress matters; and third, that – equipped with the right tools and given vast opportunities – the Filipino can truly change the world.

My friends, since 2005, you have kept faith with us. We have sustained programs with partners that have fortified our alliance through the years. NLEXcellence is here to stay because it has met and continues to meet a real need.

She said each year since 2005, “we have discovered new things about participants in these awards. We know even more the logic of the industry. And, through NLEXcellence, we are happy to have helped bring us all to higher standards of road safety and the higher limits of excellence. “

Through this venturesome journey with you all, we have picked up awards along the way. Only last year, we won the prestigious Anvil Award granted by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines.

Actually, the Award is a side benefit to our real reward – the reward of seeing every vehicle raised to the level of road safety ... Every driver elevated to a higher standard of performance ... And every practice raised several notches higher in excellence.

We dare say that our people are safe on the road, and our passengers are safe inside the vehicle -- simply because we at NLEXcellence have improved ourselves and our vehicles and our practice every step of the way.

Five years ago, we concretized our vision to make road safety paramount in the way we do things. We said there must be a way to dramatize – and sustain – our commitment to keep the roads safe. We decided that having a yearly awards program where participants outdo

themselves in practising road safety will keep road safety as a top-of- mind priority.
