The ‘maker’ of Nadine Lustre and James Reid is dead

 By Boy Villasanta

Big people behind the creation of high profile stars like Nadine Lustre and James Reid aren’t and shouldn’t be forgotten like Brenda M. Bayhon, one of Viva Entertainment’s bigwigs, who died recently of respiratory complications. Just before she died, she seemed lively and very active.

Entertainment writer Dave Rojo who worked as one of the publicists of Vicor Music Corporation in the late 70s was very close to Brenda who was some sort of a big boss in the recording company put up by showbiz moguls Vic del Rosario and Orly Ilacad (Vicor comes from the mix of the first syllables of the names of the two organizers). Later on, Vicor independently existed when del Rosario founded Viva Films and Ilacad started OctoArts International, a local recording and a distribution arm of foreign labels. Brenda was taken in by Boss Vic as one of the executives of the infant film outfit.

Until Viva became a major player in the filmmaking business, Bayhon was one of the top brasses of the company as supervising producer and advertising and promotion head. When she died, she was at the helm of Pinoy Box Office or PBO, the cable television channel or what is known as Community Antennae Television or CATV of a certain locality.

When Dave learned of Brenda’s death, he was devastated. “I couldn’t sleep because of the death of Brenda. She was so nice a person,” intimated Rojo, a veteran writer and graphic artist who went to the US in the mid-80s to work there as an artist but he’s back in his homeland to write and design more for show business.

Rojo couldn’t believe one of her best friends was gone. “Nagbalak pa naman kami last week ng reunion. Kami-kami na nagsimula sa Vicor (We who started Vicor even planned a reunion) but it didn’t push through because we couldn’t find the right time that everyone would be free),” informed Dave.

Until he read in Brenda’s Facebook post that she would again go under the knife because there was a lump in her lung. “She posted something like ‘please pray for me,” recalled Rojo.

Dave was sorry there were times they would banter in FB because of many Duterte issues. “Si Brenda, pro-Duterte ‘yan. Ako naman, anti-Duterte. Sabi n’yan sa akin one time, ikaw naman, pinasasama mo ang loob ko (Brenda was pro-Duterte while I’m anti. There was one time she told me very intimately, ‘you hurt me’,” he recounted.

It’s over and gone. Rojo and other Vicor and Viva people went to her wake at the Loyola Memorial Chapels in Commonwealth to pay their last respects for a colleague.

Everyone remembers Brenda as the supervising producer of such hits as “Maging Sino Ka Man,” a Robin Padilla-Sharon Cuneta starrer and “Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum,” a Robin-Vina Morales project among others. She was also on top of the marketing and promotion of “Diary ng Panget,” a monster hit movie which started Nadine Lustre and James Reid.

Bayhon was a pivotal force in the creation of Nadine and James as superstars because she also contributed a lot in the brainstorming of the project.

Brenda, may you rest in peace.
