Lady producer’s death kept under wraps in deferrence to her wish for privacy

By Boy Villasanta

A lady film producer’s passing was kept hush hush to the public recently so as not to invite frenzy and fiesta mood, and more importantly, to keep the privacy of the family among showbiz folks.

It took one week before the news officially came out that she was truly gone.

Entertainment writer Danny Vibas was puzzled if movie producer Baby Pascual—or her namesake--  Baby Pascual Films and Associates, one of the major movie outfits in the 80s —was really dead. It was because Baby’s brother, 1987 Urian Best Director William Pascual (for “Takaw-Tukso”), was a dear and bosom friend he was always around.

“As a matter of fact, the early morning when Baby’s death circulated around, William and I were together and there was no sign of grief or anything mournful written on him,” Danny recalled.

The Pascual woman’s death was even a conversation piece during the joint birthday bash of movie writers Dave Rojo and Art Tapalla one day after her closest buddies talked about it in a hushed tones.

“It wasn’t even posted on social media although one of Baby’s closest friends, movie columnist Mercy Lejarde had a hint posted on her Facebook but it was immediately deleted,” Vibas recounted.

According to the vivacious entertainment writer, Baby and some members of her family even took a vacation in Singapore recently. Although she was sick of diabetes, Baby would not be affected by it.

In the course of one whole week, Danny and other media colleagues close to Baby didn’t have any inkling the sad story was real.

Until after the dead was cremated and her ashes were already safely kept in an urn that the Pascuals finally blurted the real score. “It was, after all, the request of Baby, according to William. There and then we finally learned that she’s already gone,” Vibas gushed.

It was only after a week that the wake for Baby was observed with the urn at the funeral centerpiece.

“It was also to keep the living image of Baby in the minds of those who care for her. Ngayon, ayaw na ng mga tao na makita ang mahal nila na nasa kabaong (People nowadays don’t want to see their departed loved ones in caskets),” Danny opined.

During the wake, Baby’s protégées, actresses Lovely Rivero, Karla Kalua (mom of young actresses Ehra and Michelle Madrigal) and Tanya Gomez were present to condole and to share the grief of the Pascual family. The three women were part of the quadruple “Chikas,” a teen lingo attributed to young girls in the early 1980s which was also the same title of the film produced by Baby. The other members of the group were Rachel Anne Wolfe and Jaclyn Jose.

Baby’s death was purposely kept from the public eye because for reasons such as avoidance of private intrusion. “You know how showbiz is when there’s tragedy. It devours a person like anything, so privacy is violated. It seems there’s a festive atmosphere during wakes when they should be solemn and quiet,” said Vibas.

Other productions of Baby Pascual Films and Associates, Inc. are “Ang Babae sa Ulog” which starred Jean Saburit and Ricky Belmonte directed by Ed Palmos; “Juramentado” which featured Ramon Revilla, Sr. directed by Efren Piñon; “Bertong Barako” which headlined Dante Varona directed by Willy Milan and many more
