Ivan Padilla gives Philippine films a try

Ivan Padilla and Alessandra de Rossi

By Boy Villasanta

Ivan Padilla, not the bad boy of seven years ago, is a Filipino American Hollywood actor, who returned to his father’s homeland to give Philippine films a try.

He successfully auditioned with Alessandra de Rossi for Viva Films’ “12” a foray into millennials’ often volatile relationships.

Is he the same Ivan Padilla, a member and a name of a notorious Ivan Padilla gang that was a subject of criminal dragnet some seven years ago?

Award-winning actress Suzette Ranillo just laughs off the misidentification because the current Ivan Padilla is an entirely different person from the infamous character.

Besides, the Ivan Padilla today is very much alive.

The Philippine Ivan Padilla is also apart from the Ivan Padilla, a Spanish actor from Cataluña, Spain.

Fil-Am and Hollywood actor Ivan Padilla returned to the Philippines to join local show business to pursue his dream and to embody the legacy of his grandfather, the late actor Amado Cortez.

Cortez was Suzette’s stepdad being married to her mom Gloria Sevilla.

“Ivan grew up with us in the States,” shared Ranillo who acts as the personal manager of Padilla.

When Ivan decided to give local showbiz a try, he was asked by film director Dondon Santos to audition for a role in “12” when Viva Films took over its production from another film outfit. Ivan, said Suzette, passed the test with flying colors.

Critics and ordinary filmgoers alike are one in saying Padilla is a revelation in the film. Despite his deficiency in speaking Filipino, Ranillo attested that her ward is a fast learner.

Ivan has appeared in such American productions as “ER” on TV and a number of foreign movie projects.

“He has mastered a lot of Filipino conversational Tagalog,” informed Suzette. “He never stops learning the language.”

Ivan is very much around in Manila and has been battling the traffic mess day in and day out. When Transport Asia Magazine gave this writer an assignment on entertainment-related transport story to come out in December, one of the subjects that we managed to get some interviews on the subject was Padilla.

Although this writer missed him out in the list, Ivan’s answers to questions are included here.

From Ivan who once in a while injects Filipino in his text messages said: “Kapag matindi ang traffic sumasakay ako sa angkas, kasi, I’m too emotional para maghintay sa traffic higit sa one and a half hours (If the traffic is terrible I back ride because I’m too emotional to wait for the traffic to ease up for one and a half hours).”

“Pero if nasa traffic na, nag-aaral ako ng Tagalog. May notes ako na palagi dinadala (If I am already caught in a heavy traffic, I study Tagalog. I have notes I always bring with me),” he stated.
